Description
Oryx gazelles have horns that are 120 to 150 centimeters long. This is where they get their name, as "oryx" means "sharp tool" in Greek. Lions, leopards, and hyenas learn the hard way that these animals are very good at defending themselves. The temperature in their desert habitat can well exceed 40°C. But oryx gazelles have a trick to combat the heat. They raise their body temperature to exceed that of their surroundings. This allows them to dissipate heat and absorb "cooler" air.
